New Year, Renewed Focus

Posted on Jan 1st, 2009 by Jeff : All Yields To Its Opposite Jeff

It's been awhile since I posted and updated my page on Zaadz. I can't believe its been over a year, time flies!

I'm in the process of settling into my first studio and preparing to enter private practice. I'm revamping my website and hope to post more updates here soon.

All the best in the new year!

Alan Watts Animated!

Posted on Jul 26th, 2007 by Jeff : All Yields To Its Opposite Jeff

Never been a huge fan of Stone & Parker but this is pretty cool:) I'm working on doing some animation to my spiritual teachers recordings (Krishnamurti, Yogananda, and Watts as well) just in a completely different style and approach than this.

Chinese Calligraphy Animation

Posted on Jun 30th, 2007 by Jeff : All Yields To Its Opposite Jeff

Saw this a couple years back on the SIGGRAPH 2003 animation theater reel. Very elegant and unique use of the CGI animated medium! Not sure who the artist(s) are- credited to Global Digital Creations Holdings Limited based in China.

Visionary Animator: Timur Baysal

Posted on Jun 22nd, 2007 by Jeff : All Yields To Its Opposite Jeff

Timur Baysal, widely known as Taron is a unique Computer Graphics Artist working in the 3D field since many years. 3D modeler, programmer, illustrator, fine 3D surface materials craftman has created some of the most emotionally intense digital illustrations. Strongly determined to make his personality come alive he frequently chose to work with smaller professional groups where he could express his skills at his best rather than going to be "a number" in a bigger mechanism.

This is a beautiful animation called People done by Taron:

Visionary Animator: Chris Landreth

Posted on Jun 14th, 2007 by Jeff : All Yields To Its Opposite Jeff

Chris Landreth is an American animator working in Canada, best known for his work on the 2004 film, Ryan. Chris Landreth uses standard CGI animation in his work, with the added element of what Chris calls Psychorealism. This often puts a surrealist styling into his work, notably The End, Bingo, and Ryan. For instance, in Ryan, Chris uses emotional disraughts in people's lives to appear on their face. Psychorealism is a style first put to words by Chris Landreth to refer to what Karan Singh described as, "the glorious complexity of the human psyche depicted through the visual medium of art and animation."

Note from me: Chris has inspired me to pursue animation and incorporate his methodology of psychorealism in my art therapy practice with my clients. I will be implementing this practice in my internship this year and in my thesis- I am looking forward to sharing this with you!

Visionary Animator: Satoshi Kon

Posted on May 31st, 2007 by Jeff : All Yields To Its Opposite Jeff
Update: Watch the entire movie online after signing up for a crunchyroll account!
                Paprika Online

Satoshi's works often blur fantasy and reality to the point where they are no longer distinguishable, and his films deal with subject matter not usually found in anime. He examines the human psyche and archetypes within the framework of modern Japanese popular culture, as well as issues of personal and cultural identity.

His latest film Paprika was just released in the US- I give it my highest recommendation- really amazing stuff!  agree with the New York Times quote: Evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon, while most of their American counterparts are remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox.

Plot:

In the future, a revolutionary new psychotherapy treatment called PT has been invented. Through a device called the "DC Mini" it is able to act as a "dream detective" to view inside people's dreams and explore their unconscious thoughts. The head of the team working on this treatment, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, begins to use the machine illegally to help psychiatric patients, using her alter-ego "Paprika," a persona she assumes in the dream world.

The movie opens with Paprika assisting Detective Konakawa Toshimi, who becomes one of the central characters later in the movie. Before the government can pass a bill authorizing the use of such advanced psychiatric technology, three of the prototypes are stolen, sending the research facility into an uproar. This is particularly unnerving, because in their uncompleted state, the DC Minis could enter any person's dream. In the wrong hands, the potential misuse of the device could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate a dreamer's personality while they are asleep. Tokita Kosaku, the inventor of the machine, assists Dr. Atsuko Chiba and their Chief in finding the culprit of the theft.

You might know Peter from his most famous creation- Aeon Flux. I would recommend checking out the clip below from youtube as well as some other clips of his on there as well as the short Matriculated from the Animatrix compilation. An amazing mind and talent, has really inspired me to pursue this artform.
